Spanish Eyes Fixed On The Spanish Essay

July 15th, 2009

First off, for anyone worried about having to do their Spanish essay, it is a laudable worry to have because, particularly for native speakers of English, the ability to complete assignments in another language is a precious skill too few Britons possess. Due to the elevated position of the English language – because of the exporting of the language during the days of British colonial power and, more importantly perhaps, because of the fact it is the language spoken by the world’s most powerful nation, America – many people born and raised in the U.K. do not know how to speak another language.

  • This is a desperately sad fact that Britons have been spoiled by the universality of the English language. There is too much of an arrogance and laziness associated with having the English language in this vaunted position, making its speakers believe that learning another one is not necessary for them. Of course, there are many bi-lingual Britons, but even they are affected by the same misguided complacency. They learn their heritage language as well as their home language and yet still carry the same disregard for other languages, despite benefitting from their own linguistic duality. Within Europe, it is Britain with the poorest amounts of bi-lingualism, with many European inhabitants shaming the British with their ability to speak more than just their home language, albeit that it is English.

  • Those studying another language and having to complete essays and produce coursework related to that study will find they have given themselves an exhilarating and extremely gratifying topic of study. Of all the European languages, Spanish is arguably the most useful. Whilst the National Curriculum promotes French as the main other language of study, for obvious reasons of proximity, Spanish opens up more opportunities, vocationally and for recreational travel. With Spanish accomplished, South America opens itself up to exploration, although the largest country of the South Americas, Brazil, is often misguidedly included in that portal for would-be travellers, until they realise that the Brazilians speak Portuguese!

  • No Time For Siestas When The Spanish Essay Needs Completing

  • Before any travelling can be done, though, you have to complete that coursework, whether it is GCSE coursework or coursework beyond that, and pass those exams. In completing coursework, doing essays and producing other kinds of study, you may be asked to look at the language itself and study the mechanical usage of the language, such as recognising and understanding the different conjugations and how they are employed in everyday speak. Or alternatively, your essay could be recognising the diversity within Spain that has led to some quite hostile factionalising and a certain amount of intra-lingual jingoism between Catalans, Castilians and the other languages that are commonly spoken on that part of the Iberian Peninsula.

  • Completing a Spanish essay may not seem quite so complicated as, say, a Macbeth essay for English literature coursework or a highly involved assignment on global warming, for example, but it requires an accuracy of information and a delivery of the main points that will show good essay structure and understanding of the topic being discussed. The hard work it undoubtedly is will be a lifelong benefit that will offer you many interesting global opportunities.

    Avoiding Long-Windedness With Short Essays

    July 14th, 2009

An essay usually seems like it is going to last for ages. Whether you are a year 7 pupil given their first extended writing task of secondary school, a weary, truculent teenager having to be dragged through his GCSE coursework, or a sometimes diligent, too often party-loving student trying to get through the demands of a degree with a constant hangover, getting that essay title will leave you groaning at the amount of research, planning and writing you will be obliged to do. It can feel all too consuming and never-ending. With such dread and lethargy involved in completing essays, it would seem that having to produce a short essay would be a welcome alternative. However, it is a paradox that the short essay can be a more complex beast to complete than its longer counterpart.

  • The first thing is that we become gradually hard-wired to accept that an essay is long. The very word evokes feelings of reams and reams of pages, imprinted with complex terminology and a challenging lexicon of jargonistic terms and references. Under those presumptions, do we stumble into the task of completing our assignment. When it comes to delivering a short essay, we are so used to writing long essays, the shorter variant becomes a difficult task to get into.

  • Be short on execution but not short on planning

  • A short essay may well be simply summarising a topic. Having to write a short essay for your Romeo and Juliet coursework, say on the nurse’s role in the relationship between the two lovers, will not demand as much detailed, analytical exploration as would a normal length essay. Yet, it is often found that brevity is harder to achieve than when there is scope to be as extensive as needed. Whilst the idea of having to produce 3,000 words can seem daunting, once you have established your essay plan so you know what it is you want to write, the vista of word length is actually more than useful. The problems are greater when asked to fit what you need to say in a very limited amount of words. It can become like trying to fit a bullock into a telephone box to the essayist trained to analyse expansively. Writing a short essay calls for a different kind of creative composure.

  • The answer to tackling such problems that short essays bring is to learn how to be economical with words, being able to explain themes, concepts and ideas without verbosity and without being sidetracked. It is not good in any type of essay to be led by tangential distractions, but very much so in a short essay, should you be mindful of sticking only to the most pertinent of issues. This is where good planning is essential. Having the essay structure laid out clearly is a must as this is will keep your discipline as you write.

  • Having at your disposal, a clear essay outline of central themes to mention will be the key to how successfully your short essay reads.

It’s All Sketchy Without That Essay Outline

    July 10th, 2009

Just like spontaneously jumping straight into a lake, you can’t dive into doing an essay without assessing it through the all important essay outline. In terms of lakes, you firstly have to see it and presumably, in seeing it, you will know the environment. If it is a known lake to you, you will be happy with the environment you are in by the time you decide that jumping in is an acceptable next step. Once you are happy with the extraneous details, you will assess the lake. Is it deep? Are there unexpected, potentially dangerous things lurking underneath, ready to trap you and drag you down. Is the lake clean? All these things are considered before you take that first dip. Maybe they are considered in an instant or over some time, but we consciously, or subconsciously make these assessments just because our lives are fairly important to us to want to ensure we don’t throw it away thoughtlessly.

  • Essay writing and coursework completion is not life threatening (even for the anxious, hyperventilating type ) but just like jumping into a lake, it is always best to do make some assessment of how you are going to complete a piece of work you have been asked to present. If you do a reconnaissance of the lake before diving in, then you should do a reconnaissance of your essay before starting that introductory paragraph. It is important that this is done because, just as in the analogy, there are many problems that can occur with your assignment if you don’t.

  • Avoiding Being Out of Line: Using Your Essay Outline

  • The idea of having an essay outline is all in the planning and structuring of your essay. Having an essay plan is critical. When given a topic to write about, you need to know in what sequence you are going to write your material. If you have a range of interesting, persuasive facts or opinions to explore, then you’ll ruin the impact with poor planning; it could be the difference between an A and a D grade! This outline, or plan, involves having a clear introduction that sets out the purpose of the essay. This then dictates the rest of the essay, tying you to those parameters in your main points and arguments. For an argument essay or not, present your points and examine them in detail one after the other. Do not mix up the discussion of more than one point. This is a classic symptom of poor or absent planning. Three points is usually the safe amount to ensure balance and thoroughness of examination, presenting the pro points and then the counter points one after the other.

  • If you have an essay outline at the outset, there should be no reason to feel that your essay structure has been poorly constructed and if that can be avoided, it is likely that you have examined your points relevantly and clearly and whether your essay is for your Masters dissertation or something less esteemed, this can only benefit you.

Putting Your All Into The Personal Essay

    July 8th, 2009

A personal essay is an introspective, personal piece of writing. Of course, that means that the subject of your writing is yourself and should be an honest, fairly exposing exposition if it is to be one of any quality, depth and feeling. School children to senior students will be asked to produce a personal piece of writing (although, clearly, a physics undergraduate might not expect to write something quite so metaphysical)

  • When at school, a favourite essay title for teachers to give pupils is the autobiographical piece of writing. Ideal for children beginning secondary school as equally as it is ideal for Year Ten pupils beginning their GCSE coursework, writing an essay about yourself makes for a light but important introduction into the world of coursework production. That does not mean that everyone finds it easy. Whilst it is usually those pupils who might struggle with all kinds of writing, pupils can often find themselves flummoxed by the idea of having to write about themselves, often citing a boring and uneventful life as the reason why they cannot find anything of note to write about. But writing the kind of event-driven life that James Bond would gasp at is not necessary. The first thing to know is that having an eventful life and writing about events in your life are two different phenomena that do not have to coalesce for a piece of writing to be riveting.

  • Many autobiographies written by famous people may have glitzy parties, the inside of sport, music or politics to beguile us, or numerous affairs, marriages and divorces to keep us amazed but it is essentially about how these events are presented that is the most important. An exciting life can be made boring by a poor delivery so that tells us that a boring life can be made interesting by the way it is presented to us through the language on the page.

  • As Coursework Goes, You Can’t Beat The Personal Essay

  • The reason why such essay writing is set by teachers for pupils is not just about setting something easy to start them off, but it is about pupils learning how expressive language can aid a story to come alive. There is no more known topic than the story of yourself so therefore, knowing the story already, the pupils should be able to concentrate more on essay structure and importantly, the words that they wish to employ in telling the tale. Of course, they still find it difficult, usually because of the dubiousness that still persists that they have anything worthy to say; once you convince children that it is not what you tell but how you tell it that creates interest, you hopefully, have budding Charles Dickens’ expressing their mediocre lives in the most articulate and flamboyant of ways.

  • If the exercise is successful and they show an adeptness with such writing, then it sets them up for the greater demands of their coursework, whether it is Key Stage Three studying ‘Skellig’ or ‘The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler’ or Key Stage Four studying Macbeth or having to produce an argument essay. All in all, writing a personal essay of whatever description is a good introduction for pupils at the start of their long-term writing experience.

    Writing About Global Warming

    July 1st, 2009

The hot topic (excuse the partially unintended pun!) for any student studying the environment is global warming. Being set the task of providing a global warming essay opens the student into the bonuses and pitfalls of such a venture. The bonus is that there is so much information out there to make researching the topic a synch, although of course, sometimes the gamut of available fact and opinion can provide a headache in the essay writing. The major pitfall has to be the almost universal clamour to see the global warming concern in terms of absolutely certain catastrophe, meaning that, for the less discerning student, the temptation can be to overload what is meant to be a balanced argument essay with the ‘facts’ espousing the fear of an impending global disaster. What is then left out is the valid but very much vilified counter-argument which looks at why the global warming argument is overstated.

  • The global warming essay does present a challenge of how to deliver a high quality assignment in a broad and balanced way. The political consensus definitely rests with the catastrophic consequences advocates with much opinion and fact-based admonitions that can be researched and utilised to tell us why we must act now to save the planet. The official Government position also directs its rhetoric, if not its policies, firmly in that direction. For the student then, the overwhelming urge is to work along those lines and it is within this train of thinking that a myopic presentation of the debate can leave the essay without the breadth of true analysis and scrutiny it should have.

  • The Rising Tide Of The Global Warming Debate

  • Most students, politically on the left, take the view on climate change that is currently the most promoted; that we need to act to avoid a global meltdown. This is generally so, whether the student is a pupil engaging in GCSE coursework or is a degree student. The challenge therefore, in such a highly charged arena as this topic inhabits, is to provide that counter-argument e.g. that there really is no looming catastrophe as the world has had these periodic cycles of cooling and warming throughout its 6 billion year history. This viewpoint is so universally unpopular – or so it would seem – that it almost seems acceptable to give it short shrift. This is a mistake that the student should avoid falling into, and their essay plan should be structured to safeguard against that.

  • No matter how marginalised the counter-argument appears to be, it still needs to be given the fifty per cent weighting that should be de rigueur in any essay. One never knows how visionary that Masters dissertation might prove to be in the future when the debate has the benefit of hindsight, the evidence showing how climate vacillates alarmingly from period to period. What appears to be a fait accompli today can just as easily be a non sequitur tomorrow so it behoves the diligent student at any level, during coursework editing, to ensure a healthy respect for the contrary viewpoint, even on global warming. The exception relates to the conclusion, where, generally, there is scope to espouse your own opinion.
