3 Paragraph Essay
Wednesday, May 5th, 20103 Paragraph Essays: Learning the Rudiments of Essay Writing
In Essay writing, paragraph breaks denote a change in thought or an introduction of a new point. Students writing an essay at an elementary level are often confused when it comes to starting a new paragraph. They rather prefer to present their thoughts in a single flowing one paragraph. 3 Paragraph essay writing is thus the basic essay writing exercise that is given to the elementary school students to make them understand the nuances of essay writing.
3 paragraph essays provide the platform to understand a basic structure and format of an essay. Any piece of writing needs an introduction to the given topic, an elaboration and analysis of its features and a concluding paragraph that sums up the overall argument taken up in the essay. The more evolved form of essays namely the five and seven paragraph essays is essentially an offshoot of the 3 paragraph essays. The middle paragraph, also called the body or the supporting paragraph is further split into numerous paragraphs in accordance to the number of arguments taken up for supporting the thesis.
Here is a quick guide to writing a 3 paragraph essay:
Make an essay outline broadly classifying the topic, the thesis statement, the supporting points and other information about the topic, and a conclusive statement. The Outline will be thus:
Introduction: It states the main idea of the essay topic, has one or two, not more, supporting statements that maintain the point of view of the writer, and a concluding sentence. The introduction opens the essay topic to the reader and provides an overview of the essay. It is thus important to be precise and save all the other information for the next paragraph.
Supporting paragraph/ Body: In this paragraph, take up the supporting points and add sub points to convince the reader round to your view. The content and style of the paragraph depends largely on the essay type. If you are writing a descriptive essay, the description should be given in this paragraph, similarly for analytical essays, all the analysis and interpretation is provided here. The writer does not however have to bother about the paragraph break as the information provided is to the point, and involves an elaboration of one or two aspects only.
Conclusion: The last paragraph of the 3 paragraph essays is a rehash of the above arguments. It restates the thesis statement, the supporting points and sums up the main point.
When writing a three paragraph essay, you can vary the length of the paragraphs according to the need. However, the basic structure demands the introduction and the conclusion to be almost equal in length and shorter than the supporting paragraph. A three paragraph essay is the best and the most suited essay structures for essays that are less detailed and have a single approach to the given topic.
