Think of new topics for art coursework
Monday, January 18th, 2010Interesting and novel topics while doing art coursework, catch the examiner’s attention
It is wise to take the option of doing art coursework at both GCSE as well as A levels. There are a lot of options available to students who want to pursue Art as a subject at both these levels. The University of Cambridge offers Art & Design as a subject at secondary and higher secondary levels. The subject covers a wide range of topics beginning from the origin of art, the basics of design and delving deep into the works of famous artists. The students are encouraged to come out with their original ideas that will be judged and graded as part of the final exam that they have to pass.
Stipulations for coursework:
The Art & Design coursework that we are focusing on here encourages the student to opt for one or two of the many topics that are available. If the student is going to focus on Art, he could do a study on the paintings, sculpture or any artistic rendition of a prominent artist. Picasso, Cezanne, Randall-Page, O’Keefe, Monet and Raphael are just a few of these artists the students could focus on. The student needs to submit a sample of his own work after he has fulfilled other exam criteria.
Assessment & Evaluation:
The most important angle that one has to think about while opting for art coursework is the process of assessment and evaluation. The student needs to be completely aware of the grading process, whether it is coursework or an essay. Individual marks are allotted for presentation, style and other technical details of the art that he is focusing upon. It need not be a situation that anybody is familiar with. It could be an artistic representation of what the student has in his mind of a problem that is present in society. For instance, he could represent the menace of corruption in his painting or series of painting. Of course, he also has to present a proper synopsis of what he intends to do, so that the evaluator would know the parameters that have been set.
The grading process in most exams conducted by the University of Cambridge International Examinations, revolves around standards of excellence that the student is supposed to exhibit. Sufficient importance is given to various aspects so that the assessment and evaluation process is both comprehensive as well as time bound. The student is given ample time to present his work. Therefore, it is important that any student opting for coursework in Art & Design, is fully aware of the grading and evaluating process.
Progression:
A student, who does Art as a GCSE subject, can go on to pursue it at A Levels as well. In continuation, he could also think of doing a bachelors’ and then a masters’ degree in Art, if he is interested. While doing all these qualifications he will find that the art coursework that he has chosen at school level has been a strong foundation. Since coursework and dissertations require a great deal of work and effort, a student should know what he is getting into, before signing up for an Art course.
