Dissertation topics – make the right choice

Dissertation topics – you could make right choices if you know the basics

Finding the right dissertation topics indicate that you have understood the subject well. It is not possible for any student to come up with a topic if they are not aware of the depth of the subject. Therefore, choosing the right topic is of paramount importance in the writing of any dissertation. It is both a challenge as well as a test of your knowledge. So here are a few tips that you could think of when you are on your topic-hunt.

1.    Considering the subject that I am working on at present, would this topic be a good one to write on? For instance, if you are doing behavioral psychology, you could think of various topics that focus on some sort of behavioral problems. Obsessive Compulsory Disorder or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, are topics that would be relevant to your subject. Therefore, the first step in choosing a topic is relevance.
2.    What quantum of resources do you have access to if you are going to work on a particular topic? If you have limited resources and you do not have the time or the money to conduct a few surveys, it could become quite difficult to do a dissertation on any kind of topic. Therefore, it is important for you to know your limitations before you choose the topic.
3.    The time frame – this is the next most important issue you should take into consideration. Remember you are not going in for essay writing. You are doing a dissertation. This is a lot more time consuming and challenging in more ways than one. You need to have the right frame of mind to do research and above all, you need the time. So how do you go about it? Sit back and think of all this before you decide to tell your guide about your choice of topic. Do not tell him or her, before you actually think of all the work that would have to go into the exercise of dissertation writing.
4.    Before you make your final decision on dissertation topics, it would be wise to go through the literature that is already available on the same topic. Find out if there are other similar works done. You should not waste time on a topic that has already been done. Apart from feeling like an idiot, you would also be penalized for taking someone else’s ideas. So watch out and do not be repetitive. It is so easy to make such a mistake and discover it at a much later date.
