Different types of English Coursework and Tips to Carry Them Out

If you are an art student attending classes in language and literature, you must be well informed on the different types of English coursework that you will be expected to undergo in course of your semester. Unlike science coursework  or a statistics term paper, an English coursework encompasses a variety of assignments ranging from evaluation to writing book reviews to presenting one’s own samples of work.

Different types of English Coursework and tips to carry them out

Essay writing: Writing an essay  is the most common essay assignment that begins right from secondary school and continues until you are in college. A student must be aware of different types essay: Narrative, informative, argumentative among many others and the difference between them. Essay writing in form of an English coursework will mainly cover more creative essay types like descriptive or narrative that explores the literary aspects.

Book Reviews: Another most common English coursework is writing book reviews. Writing a book review helps student analyse various perspective to the fiction and understand it from a new light. It also helps students develop their expression had share their reading experience.

Poetry evaluation/critical analysis: Writing a critical analysis of a poem is central to an English coursework. Your professor might ask you to paraphrase a poem or explain it from varies perspectives and interpretations. Since reading and understanding literature is a subjective experience, poetry evaluation becomes a mode of personal expression and interpretation.

Practical, presenting a creative sample on given writing prompts: creative writing: Some professors may ask their students to present samples of their own writing. Such writing exercises promote creativity within students and trigger their creative process. A common type of such assignments are writing prompts. Either students will be given a theme on which they have to write on the genre of their choice, or there may be writing prompts like photographs, word fillers etc.

Reflective Essays: Students may be asked to produce a reflective essay following a sample presentation of their own work. Such essays discuss the writer’s creative process, the inspiration from which the work was derived, or his/her personal interpretation and understanding of the work of art.

Creative and Analytical Essays:  Analyzing a dramatic work in  terms of the stage effects, characterization, scene etc is another assignment you are most likely to get after completing a text in the class. You may be asked to write a Macbeth Essay or a Romeo and Juliet Coursework, evaluating Shakespearean tragedies with respect to Shakespeare’s concept of tragedy and comedy or the role of fool in his drama.
