Essay Writing: The Importance of Organizing Thoughts

When it comes to Essay writing most of the students find it difficult to begin writing. They would often say “I know what to say but i do not know how to say it.” Expression is an important aspect when it comes to recording, sharing and communicating ideas. The aim of any form of essay writing exercise is to help students learn express themselves by applying various writing devices. Let us find out how you can organize thoughts, express them in an effective manner and make your essay convincing.

1. Your first step is to choose an essay topic. Make sure you are passionate and curious about the topic you choose to write on. It should be wide and general in approach. In case a topic is given to you, do a bit of primary reading to find more about it. Your research should be related to the topic. Let your reading be an unconscious and non deliberate exercise. Let your brain grasp the information.

2. Think about the essay topic, put down words or sentences related to the topic as they occur to you. Jot them randomly on a paper. For example if your essay topic is “Audio Books” write down all the impressions, questions, answers, information, ideas that come to you. It could be something like “a new approach to reading, a recent phenomenon, enhances listening skills, will increase popularity of books, flexibility, may not suit everyone.”

3.Having written your thoughts, elaborate on them. Write a sentence or paragraph out of each point. This will help you clarify your muddled thoughts and take stand against or in favour of a particular approach.  The better the clarity of your thoughts and ideas will be, the more convincing your essay will become.

4.Once you have your thoughts on paper, separate them into neat categories. Categorize them  by asking questions and providing answers. For example “What are audio books?, Has it changed the way people read?, When did the concept first come?, Do people enjoy reading audio books?” and likewise.

5.You could also make an essay outline keeping in mind the essay format. The first paragraph introduces the subject to the reader and makes a general statement about the concept of Audio Books giving more information about them. The second paragraph explains how Audio books are different from other Books and the reason for their popularity. The third paragraph deals with the benefits. You may talk of the disadvantages of audio books in the fourth paragraph. And in your concluding fifth paragraph you may sum up the above points by talking of the future of audio books.

6.To make your essay convincing you must defend your point at the end. If you think Audio books have more advantages than disadvantages, you must come back to the benefits of audio books after having specified the disadvantages and conclude it by giving a valid argument.

A relative command of grammar, spelling and punctuation is a must to make sure your ideas are not misrepresented. The above essay writing steps can help you with all kinds of essay writing, be it a sociology essay, an English coursework or a Literature review.
