Essay rubric for university level:
This is the general rubric for writing essays at university level – check it out:
- Look at the topic and how to focus on it – the main topic should be clearly specified without any repetitions or ambiguity. Also, the information that is provided should be connected with the topic and not digress from it in any way. Levels of digression can be discerned by the evaluator and it is possible that too much of digression will cost you dearly in marks or grades.
- The inclusion of facts should be placed at relevant points in the essay. Above all, the facts so included should be accurate and have citable sources. You cannot make wild statements that do not have an identifiable source or writer. If this is not done in the proper way, it would indicate that you are trying to pass off irrelevant information as your own. It would be a problem in more ways than one, if you were to resort to such an underhand act.
- The rubric states that the introduction to your essay presents the facts of the whole piece of writing in a brief and informative way. Therefore, the intro should be a welcome sign to the reader. It should present a kind of precursor of what is to come. If this is not indicated, then it would not be complete.
- The organization of the body of the essay is the next important aspect of essay rubric that has to be borne in mind. Sequence is of great importance here. When facts are not arranged in sequential order they present a very haphazard approach to writing. Grades are awarded for this kind of progression in thought and hence this needs to be attended to with great care.
- One might wonder how a university essay could have rhythm if it is not about music! Well, the answer is fairly simple – the flow of thought should be smooth and rhythmic. There should be not jumpy sentence structure, which would give the evaluator the impression that the writer does not know the subject completely.
- The right use of language and words – this is the final part of the essay rubric that needs attention. Bombastic language will only raise doubts in the minds of the evaluator about the genuineness of the writer; so watch out.
Once the rubric of a university essay is fully understood and implemented, there is no way that the evaluator can lessen the grades of a student. So read this carefully a couple of times before your write your essay.
