Thursday, February 11th, 2010Have you ever been challenged to write essay on the spot? Whether it is for writing an exam essay, participation in an essay writing competition, or writing an essay assignment in class writing an essay impromptu involves different writing strategy as the essay writer does not have the liberty to conduct research and gather resources for reference.
The structure, format and components of impromptu essays remain the same; however, you have to change the writing process to deliver your best in essay writing. Here is a step by step writing procedure:
Step 1
If you have a topic given to you, analyze the essay topic by exploring the essay genre that best suits the essay question. Brainstorm on the kinds of essays that can be written. Your essay topic determines the genre and content of your essay. It is therefore essential to understand the requirements of the essay topic before you write essay. If the essay question posed requires you to take sides and argue, you must write an analytical essay. For example if the question is “Watching Television spoils young children”, you must choose the position you have ideas on, and develop a thesis statement.
Step 2
Do not begin writing without having an essay outline. Brainstorm arguments that can be made in support of your thesis statement. If you are writing a descriptive essay, recollect visual details of a particular situation or place to express them creatively in the essay. Since you do not have the resources to refer, you must solely depend n your prior knowledge and understanding of the topic. Brainstorming is the best way to bring latent knowledge to surface.
Step3
Make an essay outline dividing the essay in the final paragraphs. Order random thoughts, collected by brainstorming and recollection, and place them in a logical pattern in the essay. Make sure you incorporate thesis statement and other signposts in the essay outline itself, doing this will assure that you are constantly using signposts in your final draft.
Step4
Proofread your essay outline for missing or inadequate information. This is very important as you will not be able to edit and rewrite your essay once you have written it. Check whether there are sufficient resources, analysis and anecdotes to back up your argument. Also, the essay outline must have a flow of argument and not a jump from one to another. The rhythm of the essay outline will be reflected in the essay.
Step5
Write essay by elaborating the points mentioned in the outline. Make sure there are sufficient paragraph breaks. Avoid writing complex sentences that may lead to grammatical errors. If you are writing under a deadline, you might miss out on editing your essay. Avoid elaborating a point beyond a limit as that would take time away from introducing a new point in the essay.
Step6
When you write essay impromptu, it is important that you manage time for essay writing. You should be left with at least five minutes to final edit or proofread your essay for spelling, logical or grammatical errors.
